Little Women: A Korean Drama with Intriguing Twists

The Korean drama Little Women first got on my radar when I saw BTS’ RM post about it on his Instagram Stories. Of course, with that endorsement from the leader of BTS himself, I had to look it up. I had heard friends talk about it but I wasn't interested. After seeing RM's post I had to check it out to see if it would be something that I would like. In this post, I will share a quick review of this Korean drama. I will also share what the cast has been doing since the show ended. If you have an interest in K-dramas and you love shows that have a good plot twist, read on! Find out if this is a must-watch for you!

The Plot

The story of Little Women revolves around the three sisters. Their paths cross with a group of rich people who have an involvement in a group called the Jeongran Society. This is a group that is unified and symbolized by a blue orchid. A rare flower that helped save the founder and original members of the society during the war.

At the start of the series, the eldest sister Injoo comes across a large sum of money from her dead friend. Not knowing that this is part of the money embezzled from the Jeongran Society, she starts using it. This leads to a series of events that puts her and her sisters in danger because of the Jeongran Society.

My Review

First off, I learned that the title is a bit misleading. It has the same title as the Louisa May Alcott novel, but it is very different from it. They say the show is a modern-day retelling. It's supposed to be loosely based on the novel. Because of that information, I expected it to be like that. When I finally saw it,  I thought the entire series turned out to be very different from the book.

The only similarity that I saw was that there were sisters who were from a poor family who had a rich aunt. Apart from that, the plot is far from the novel. The series is about three sisters. The first is Inju (Kim Go Eun), who is the eldest daughter trying to keep the family together.  The middle sister is Inkyung (Nam Ji Hyun), who works as a reporter for a radio station. the youngest is Jihu (Park Ji Hoo), a talented young artist who is still in school.

As much as I would want to go into detail, I would rather not give anything away about the plot of the series. The structure of this is thrilling for the viewer because they reveal everything one by one. I don’t want to spoil the whole viewing experience!

The only thing I want to give away is that Song Joong Ki is in this show in a cameo role. It was a small, non-significant role but the guy stood out! The show also features Wi Ha Joon, who was also on the popular series Squid Game.

The storyline for this series was disappointing at first. I was expecting it to be like the novel so I was not happy about it. But as the show went on it was better than what I thought it would be. It had elements of romance but it never focused on that as much as it was on social classes and conspiracies. It also has elements of politics and secret societies. There was also a recurring theme in the show. It was about what people would do for money and power, no matter the consequences.

It was all very interesting. I have to commend the writers of this show for how creative they were. They were able to present a story that always kept the viewers guessing. You never knew who was the “big bad” of the show and who was on the side of the lead characters. The minute you’ve decided, something happens that will make you change your mind. It was only near the end of the show that you figured out what it was all about.

The concept of this was very creative and well thought out.  I liked the part about the orchid featured in the story. They gave it a bit of a mythology/origin story that was crucial to the main plot of the series.

The casting of this series was so good, every single character played their role so well. I particularly enjoyed the acting of the main antagonists. Their portrayal was so good and so twisted! I found myself admiring their acting during the crucial parts of the show.

The show features strong women who refuse to let their circumstances get in the way of their goals. I love that no matter how their love interests came to help, it was the women who made the crucial decisions. They were the ones who took risks that helped take the show to its satisfying ending.

I became a fan of Kim Go Eun because of this show. I was aware of her before because of her other shows. I haven't seen Yumi’s Cells, Goblin, and The King: Eternal Monarch but I became a fan now that I've seen her in Little Women. She showed so much vulnerability and range in this role. I loved seeing her onscreen while watching the series.

Most of the K-dramas that I watch are romantic comedies. Now and then there are shows like this that divert from the more popular genre that I find myself enjoying so much. I hope that I get to discover more shows like this in the future!

Where are they now?

Kim Go Eun (In Joo)

After Little Women, she has two film projects lined up titled Exhuma and Love in the Big City. No news on the release date for those films. Apart from that, there are rumors that she is set to marry her former co-star Lee Min Ho. No confirmation from either party, but I would be so happy for both of them if this is true. They look so good together!

Nam Ji Hyun (In Kyung)

After Little Women, she was last seen in the series High Cookie. I could not find any other for her after that.

Park Ji Hoo (In Hye)

She has a role in the film Concrete Utopia which stars Lee Byung Hun, Park Seo Joon, and Park Bo Young. It's a movie that I am looking forward to seeing very soon.

She was also in the shows Miraculous Brothers and Spirit Fingers post Little Women. She is also a cast member of the show All of Us Are Dead.

Wi Ha Joon (Do Il)

He has been busy after Little Women. He has been a lead in the show The Worst of Evil. He will also be appearing in Gyeongseong Creature and Shark: The Storm. I'm excited to see Gyeonseong Creature because of the leads Park Seo Joon and Han Seo Hee. I didn't even know Ha Joon was part of this until I researched it for this post!

I get to see photos of this guy here in the country because he has also endorsed the local clothing brand Bench. He is one of the many Korean stars who have worked on ads for the brand here in the Philippines.

Uhm Ji Won ( Sang Ah)

After the show, she will be appearing in the series Hong Rang slated for 2024. It's too bad she hasn't had that many projects after the show. I loved her portrayal of the insane Sangah. Her performance was flawless, you can't help but love and hate her at the same time!

Choo Ja Hyun (Hwa Young)

There are no listed projects for her after Little Women. I have read that she is active in China. She is on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.  She is also married to Chinese actor and singer  Yu Xiaoguang.

I am very happy that I got to watch this show. If it weren't for RM's post, I would not have even considered it. I have been a rom-com girl for so long that it's rare for me to try other genres.

At first, I was not sure if it was something I would like. Not seeing much of a similarity with the book after a few episodes almost turned me off it. I was considering not finishing the series at one point. I'm glad that I decided to stick it out and watch the whole show. I loved all the twists and turns, the mythology, and the complexity of everything. I became such a fan that during my trip to Singapore, I had to go and see some of the spots that they featured in the series.

Have you seen Little Women? Did you like it? Tell me your thoughts on this series in the comments section! If you know of any other shows with interesting plot twists like this one, tell me all about it! I'd love to see more shows like this!
