How good is your dental health? What are the ways that you take care of your teeth and gums? Do you brush your teeth, floss, and use mouthwash regularly? Do you visit your dentist often? I had some dental issues recently and had to get the help of my dentist to solve them. It was then that I decided that it was time to improve my dental care regime with the Xiaomi Mijia Oral Irrigator. In this post, I share my review of the product and how this water pick can be good for you too!
I had tooth and gums issues recently and they were such a terrible experience. I was in pain for weeks and had to go on antibiotics to get better! After my experience, I knew I had to do something to avoid that happening again. That was when I decided to look for solutions to improve my gum health and prevent cavities. I found that with the Xiaomi Mijia Oral Irrigator.
I am used to brushing my teeth after every meal and using mouthwash. I used dental floss from time to time, but I must admit that I did not do it as often as I should (which is after every meal). I have issues with using dental floss. It often makes my gums bleed when I use it, so I didn’t floss until I felt that I needed to. I know that is wrong but that’s what my dental habits were at the time.
During the whole dental issue, my dentist emphasized the importance of proper flossing. It was the only way for me to avoid similar problems in the future. I talked to my friend about it, and she agreed with my dentist. She told me she got into the habit of regular flossing because she was afraid of having problems in the future. She didn't want the lack of flossing to be the reason for her to need a root canal one day.
My Issue with Flossing
The problem with me is that my teeth tend to squish too close to each other. I never wore braces to fix my teeth when I was growing up and never got to correct them. My teeth are so close to each other that it is hard to even get dental floss between them. How food even gets stuck in there is beyond me. Then again, I guess the whole teeth spacing is also why they are even harder to remove once they’re squished in there.
When I floss, even if I do get the floss between the teeth, it’s the floss that ends up stuck. I’m not even kidding. Sometimes the floss would come out torn because I had to pull hard to get it out.
Water Pick as an Alternative
I know that I still need to floss, but I had to find another way to do it. This is when I started my search for water picks. I’ve seen ads for them in the past, but I’ve never considered getting one until I had my dental problems.
According to some of the dental websites I’ve been on, water picks are a good alternative to flossing. They say there is hardly any difference between them when it comes to plaque removal.
What is a Water Pick?
For the uninitiated, a water pick is an instrument used instead of or aside from dental floss. It uses pressurized water to remove plaque and food deposits from between teeth. Like dental floss, it helps prevent cavities and gum damage. It is also called an oral pick, oral flosser, or oral irrigator.
Benefits of Using a Water Pick
Like flossing, a water pick can help remove plaque and food deposits to prevent cavities. This will lead to better dental health.
A water pick functions like dental floss. This is why it can help reverse gum issues caused by plaque and bacteria. It is also better for people with sensitive gums like me. It is a less painful option than using dental floss.
The is a difference between water picks and dental floss. Water picks flush away plaque and food deposits. Dental floss can remove the same but there is a risk of cross-contaminating your teeth and gums while you use it.
Water Picks are also better in the long run because you do not have to buy dental floss all the time. If you take care of your water pick and keep it clean, it is something that can last you a very long time.
Xiaomi Mijia Oral Irrigator
I looked through a lot of water picks of different shapes sizes and prices. I decided to buy something less than P2,000.00 that had good reviews online. This was how I found the Xiaomi Mijia Oral Irrigator, which I bought from Lazada.
Here are the features of this product:
- Portable & Battery Operated (chargeable via the provided USB-C charger, with a long battery life of 45 days and a 4-hour charging time)
- 4 Nozzle Heads (Standard, Tongue Cleaning, Brush, Rubber)
- 4 Modes (Strong, Standard, Sensitive, Pulse)
- 200 ML water tank (removable and easy to clean)
My Review
I love that it is handy, portable, and battery-operated. I can bring it when I travel and with the long battery life, I don’t need to keep charging it all the time. According to the manual, it has a battery that can last 45 days. I haven’t checked how long I’ve been using it since the first charge, but it has lasted even longer than that for me.
As a water pick newbie, it took me a while to get used to the spray. I ended up spraying the whole bathroom with water before I got the hang of using it! If you want to try a water pick for the first time, you should figure out how to use it. It is important to get a proper hand and nozzle position before you turn on the device. If you don't you will get a strong spray of water flying all over the place. Also, be sure to position yourself right in front of the sink so that the water you use doesn’t fall all over the place.
While there are four nozzle heads, I have only been using the rubber brush for flossing. The standard doesn’t seem to do much for me, and the brush is only for those people who wear braces. The tongue cleaning nozzle I can’t seem to figure it out. I keep splashing my whole face with water when I try it so I have skipped that one since my first try. If anyone out there knows what to do with it, please leave a comment and tell me how to use it!
The four modes are all very useful, but I prefer the strong mode because it removes a lot of food debris when I use it. It’s more effective for me than when I use dental floss. It helps that the nozzles are also long. This helps me to reach way up to the back teeth more compared to when I use floss.
With the large water tank, I have enough water for one use whenever I fill it up. It is easy to remove for cleaning and the user manual also gives instructions on how to do it right.
One thing I am worried about is how the silicone cover for the charging port doesn’t fit as snugly as I would like. It keeps popping up while I’m using it and I am worried that the port would get wet and damage the water pick. I’m worried about charging it now that I’ve used it. I’m not sure if it had gotten wet somehow because of how loose the cover is.
Results from the Xiaomi Mijia Oral Irrigator
After using the product for more than a week, the pain I was feeling from my gums and teeth was gone. It was more effective at easing the pain than when I was on antibiotics. Since then, I have been using this to floss my teeth daily. It is something that I would be happy to recommend to those looking for an alternative to dental floss.
According to a friend of mine, some water picks have replaceable nozzles. So far, I have not seen that option for the Mijia brand. It would be nice if I could buy spare nozzles in case I needed it. But then there might be no immediate need for it if I took good care of the nozzle. I would be fine with it for a few years or so most likely. There are tips about using warm water and vinegar to clean and disinfect the water pick that I found online. They say that it will keep it clean and prevent build-up. I haven’t tried it yet, but I am looking into it.
I’ve been wondering if I should try using mouthwash instead of water when I use the water pick. I looked it up and some sites have said that some people do this. I’m curious if it would be better. It would be a bit more expensive though.
Have any of you tried using a water pick? Would you consider using one? If you have, what brand did you try and how was the experience for you? I would love to know more about it! Leave me a message in the comments and share your own dental care experience!
