Rediscovering Bones: Revisiting the Classic Series

Is anyone else subscribed to Disney+? What do you often watch there? There are a ton of US shows both old and new and there is so much that I want to watch! Disney+ has so many of my old favorites, that I didn’t know where to start when I first subscribed. I was a bit hesitant to re-watch this old series again because it lasted for 13 seasons. With most seasons having 22 episodes each, that was a lot of watch time. But, as someone who loved this enough to have a DVD collection of it, I gave in. I decided to watch Bones again from start to finish.

It took a while for me to be able to watch the entire series considering how long it was. But since I usually watch my shows when I work out in the mornings, I was able to carve out time to see the show. It felt good to see my favorite characters and relive some of the best moments from this series. By the time I got to the series finale, I was again sad to see everyone go.

Background

For the uninitiated, Bones is based on the series of books by Kathy Reichs. It is about a forensic anthropologist named Temperance Brennan. With her expertise, she ends up working with an FBI agent to solve criminal cases. It is interesting to note that Brennan also writes crime novels. Her lead character's name? Kathy Reichs. It is a good nod to the link between the series and the novels.

I’ve tried to read a few of the Brennan books a few times. While I am a fan of the show, the books were a bit hard to wrap my head around. It might be because I had already developed an image of the characters based on how they were on TV. The books were a bit different. I decided to stop reading the books and stick to the show instead.

Crime procedural shows are something that I enjoy watching. I always find myself curious about the science and how accurate the things they are saying are. It was fascinating to see how they were able to solve crimes using forensic anthropology. I loved seeing how important science is to solving crime.

My Review

Bones is one of those procedural shows that I found myself drawn to. They often have graphic ways to show victims and crimes are on the show, but it's not too much to watch. They try to keep things as light as they can.

I also like that this doesn’t dwell only on the crime or the science. It also has a focus on the lives of the diverse characters as well. That is a good thing because this show has had a great ensemble cast from start to end. They all mesh well together so it was difficult for me as a viewer to see them go.

My Favorite Characters

I am a fan of Brennan and her squints and squinterns. the show is such a good mix of personalities that you can’t help but grow an attachment to it.

Temperance Brennan may be the lead in this one, but I was more of a big fan of Seeley Booth. Bones can be a bit annoying for me and sometimes she feels a bit unreal, but she is often balanced out by Seeley. She’s the brains, and he is the heart – and he has a lot of it. I remember back when I was first watching, there were several quotes from Booth that I had to write down. I love his lines so much whenever I hear them. Hearing those lines again when I re-watched gave a little tug in my heart as I recalled how much I loved them.

Apart from Booth, there were also other characters that I loved. One favorite was Federal Prosecutor Caroline Julian. I always loved when she was in the episode because she stood out and lit up the room. You cannot help but notice her or pay attention. I love it when she’s talking in what I can only assume is a New Orleans accent.

Another actor who I enjoyed seeing (in a limited capacity) was Cyndi Lauper. Yes, the singer from the 80s. She played Avalon, a psychic who would sometimes help the group with crime-solving.  It was always interesting when she was part of the episode. The lead characters may not believe her all but she always made an impact whenever she was onscreen.

Favorite Moments

There were a lot of moments that I loved in the show, but if I had to choose my top three, it would be these moments:

Gravedigger Rescue – This is when Bones and Hodgins (one of the squint squad) are buried alive in a car. The villain was a criminal they called the Gravedigger and the rest of the team were trying to find them. That moment when they made a last-ditch attempt to send a signal from underground was a highlight for me. My heart went out to them when they were being dug up and pulled from under the ground by everyone.

Vincent Nigel Murray’s Death – I got used to the rotating squinterns and didn’t think much of them until his death. When Vincent Nigel Murray died via a sniper who thought he was Booth, that was heartbreaking! That moment when he was dying and talking to Booth was so moving for me that I wanted to cry. That’s when I realized that the writers made the viewers invested in the squinterns. Having them in the background all the time made us get so used to them being there. They became part of it all to the point that we would mourn their loss along with the rest of the characters.

Cam and Arastoo’s Relationship Reveal – In the middle of all the drama, it was nice to see this love story. The part I loved the most was of them talking about their relationship. The one where he read his poetry to her as Angela and Hodgins watched them from a balcony. I thought that was such a sweet and simple moment. It helped to even out some of the crazy things that were happening in the show.

Where are they now?

Emily Deschanel (Bones)

She has done several TV projects since Bones. The latest one was the limited series Devil in Ohio which was on Netflix. No news of future projects as of this post.

David Boreanaz (Booth)

He has been busy as the lead star of the TV series Seal Team. He also works with his wife and a couple of friends on a nail polish line that he promotes online.

Michaela Conlin (Angela)

She has made several TV appearances, with the latest being a show called Dollface. Her last film project was a film called One True Loves.

TJ Thyne (Hodgins)

His last project has been a recurring role in the TV show The Offer.

Tamara Taylor (Cam)

She has been busy since the show. She has been on Agents of Shield and Law and Order. Her most recent project is the TV series Snowfall.

John Francis Daley (Sweets)

Aside from being an actor, he is also a writer and producer.

He was a co-writer for Spiderman: Homecoming and directed the movie Game Night. He also directed Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

John Boyd (Aubrey)

After playing an FBI agent on Bones, he has moved on to other shows where he played FBI characters again. Among these shows are FBI, FBI Most Wanted, and FBI International.

Patricia Belcher (Caroline)

She moved on after the show and has been on several TV shows like The Rookie and Lucifer.

Pej Vahdat (Arastoo)

Of all the cast members, he is the one I've seen a lot of in other shows. Post-Bones, he has appeared on Arrow, Empire, NCIS, Dynasty, Elementary, and City on a Hill.

This show may have ended years ago and all the actors have moved on to other projects, but I will always be a fan. I enjoyed the show back when I first watched it, and I enjoyed it again on Disney+. In the spirit of show reunions, I hope that they can team up for one. Like having a special limited season or a one-off show (or how about a movie?) to get the gang together again. That would be something I’d love to watch!

Have any of you seen Bones? If not, I would recommend seeing this one if you are a fan of crime procedurals. I know some people get turned off watching procedurals, but this is not too serious or too heavy to see. As someone who has watched and re-watched all the seasons, I can assure you that it's worth it!

If you have any stories about loving this show as well, share your thoughts in the comments. If you remember any great episodes from the series, I would love to know about them!
