Podcast Passion: My Audio Escapes

In this fast-paced life where multi-tasking is the name of the game, podcasts have become a part of life. It's a form of entertainment we can enjoy while we are taking care of the other things that keep us busy. They provide us with not only entertainment but also education and distraction. When I slip on my earbuds and hit play, I get transported to that private world I share with my favorite podcasters.  It turns even the mundane things interesting with these people in my ear. In this blog post, I am excited to share with you some of the podcasts that have been my main escape in recent days. Let's dive into these shows I've come to love so I can share why I am a fan!

As a podcaster myself, I should be listening to more shows of different genres. I should be learning from these people on what works. Unfortunately, I only get to listen to a few. As much as I would want to, there is not enough time to listen to everything.

There were several podcasts featured in an early episode of the Fandesals Podcast. I mention some of them in this post. For the rest, you can check them out in the episode. The YouTube version is at the end of this post!

There are three podcasters that I have been listening to lately. I hope you can find something you like in the list I'm sharing here. Leave a message in the comments if you like the same shows or if you want to listen to them after reading this post! If you know of any shows that I should listen to, tell me about it! I would love to discover new shows if I can!

Bailey Sarian - Murder, Mystery, and Makeup / Dark History

I first discovered Bailey on YouTube. It was her posts for Murder, Mystery, and Makeup that caught my attention. I saw one episode and I was so entertained that I subscribed to her channel. I have been a fan ever since. I have even recommended her to family and friends who are true crime aficionados.

Bailey has a way of making the uncomfortable stories bearable. It's more how she tells them than the story itself that makes her podcast entertaining for me. If you watch her podcast (because she has audio and video options), the video shows her applying makeup. Telling her story while sharing makeup tips is unusual, but it helps make her stories easier to bear for me.

The thing that I love about her is that despite the gory details, she does not try to shock people.  No matter how bad the stories get, she tells them in a way that would still reel you in. You won't get turned off by the details with the way she tells the stories. I know it’s weird to say this, but she tells the story in a fun way that will keep you listening despite the dark topic.

I was so happy when I found out that her shows were available as audio-only podcasts. It gives me a chance to listen while doing something else. With video, I can't always do that.

Bailey's two shows on the podcast are Dark History and Murder, Mystery and Makeup. The former focuses on a wider range of stories compared to the more modern, true crime stories of the latter.

Stephanie Soo - Rotten Mango / Baking a Murder

Like Bailey Sarian, I discovered Stephanie Soo on YouTube before finding her podcast. I saw some shorts from her show and decided to check out her full videos. She has several channels on YouTube, but her podcasts are for Rotten Mango and Baking a Murder. Both are true crime-themed. One is about actual true crime and the other is about true crime stories from books, movies, and TV.

Rotten Mango deals with true crime and is more serious compared to Baking a Murder. With Baking a Murder, she attempts to bake while she tells stories based on books, movies, and TV shows. It's much lighter than Rotten Mango and I tend to listen to that more because of it. I say lighter because sometimes her attempts at baking can be funny!

I love listening to Stephanie because of the way she speaks. Even if you don't watch her on video, her voice is very animated and you can't help but have an interest in what she's saying. Sometimes I forget that she's talking about crime because of the way she talks! It's also nice that she banters with her off-cam husband during the show. It helps you feel you are in a conversation with her since her husband asks things other people would!

I am not a true crime fan, but for some reason, I listen to the genre because of the podcasts from Bailey and Stephanie. I have to give credit to these podcasters that I listen to because of the way they present the story. They are never too dark or disturbing. It feels like you are talking to a friend who is sharing the latest news or gossip.

There are other true crime podcasts out there, but I don’t think I would like them as much as Bailey and Stephanie. True crime isn't my thing. It's only because I find these two people entertaining that I like their shows.

If you are someone like me who is not too keen on the darkness of it all, you may want to listen to these two. They are a good start-off point to darker podcasts if you ever want to get into that genre.

Lance Bass - Frosted Tips

This is a new one for me. I started almost a month ago after a friend of mine told me about it. I was a fan of NSYNC in the past, so when I found out Lance had this I subscribed immediately. This is a show that he does with his husband. Not familiar with the guy but he seems OK based on the show. I read that he had another podcast, but this show is the one he is updating these days.

The podcast features celebrities from the 90s - early 2000s as they talk about life and adulting. I am not familiar with everyone who has been a guest on the show but I love that there are many names that I recognize. The podcast is new and the topics generally depend on the guests but I like it so far. There is no theme for the whole show and it can be all over the place in that sense. But I tend to think of it as a nostalgia show. It's about looking back at these popular people from way back when.

The only thing I don't like is the ads. There are too many and it's the only thing that is turning me off the show a bit. For the first episode alone there were a lot of ads in the beginning, then there were ads in the middle. And when I say a lot, I mean very long ads that you cannot skip. I wish I could!

I pay a premium on Spotify to avoid these ads. The ads on the show are the reason I have not gotten through more episodes than I would have wanted. Bailey and Stephanie mention sponsors and there are ads but they are never as long as with Frosted Tips. If you hate ads, I'd skip this. It's not very pleasant.

The world of podcasts has gotten interesting lately. These shows used to be only on audio, but a lot of podcasters have been moving to YouTube for their shows as well. With that video component, the podcasts become talk shows. YouTube allows you to play it as audio in the same way that you can now upload it on Spotify and choose the video option.

There are a lot of other podcasts that I wish I could follow, but I don't. I tend to pick and choose episodes from shows when I find a topic that I am interested in. I usually listen, but I don't subscribe to the podcast.

Usually, I check out motivational, self-help, and learn a new language (Korean) episodes. I also listen to some celebrity gossip shows sometimes too. There were blind item shows and shows that did deep dives into some of the latest news on celebrities.

There were also podcasts that tackle history, which is something I'm interested in. If they feature a certain period that I like, I will listen to it! I'm such a nerd that way!

Does anyone out there listen to podcasts? If yes, what kind of podcasts do you listen to? Share them with me in the comments!

Here is the episode of the Fandesals Podcast that I mentioned earlier. If you can understand Tagalog, you may want to give it a watch (or listen)! Please tell me what you think of this episode in the comments!
