BTS ARMY, how are you all doing with the latest news of the last of the BTS members enlisting for the military? I thought given these recent events that it was time to look back at some of the music the group has done so far in Chapter 2. For this post, I want to focus on the music they have done as collaborations since their last group album. I hope my fellow ARMY can join me as I look back on these songs and share my thoughts about them! If I forgot a song or two, please let me know!
The Fandesals Podcast has tackled the topic of BTS before (episode embedded at the end of this post). The first one was an introduction to the group and another was a follow-up episode. This post feels like a follow-up because it's about songs they've done in Chapter 2. To be more specific, these are songs that are not in the solo albums but songs that they worked on with other artists.
As far as I know (feel free to correct me if I’m missing anything), these are the collaborations that they have done. In no particular order, here are the songs so far:
That That – PSY (featuring SUGA)
This is a very fun track, reminiscent of PSY’s older hits Gangnam Style and Gentleman. SUGA co-wrote and co-produced the track for PSY. To know how much of a hit this song was, check out the reaction of people to the song during a live performance!
The Astronaut - Jin (featuring Coldplay)
This song is almost all Jin, but Chris Martin of Coldplay does the backing vocals for this song. He also wrote the song with Jin and the band played the music for Jin when he appeared in their concert to sing this one. That makes it a collaboration for me. I love this song so much that I wrote a review of it on this blog.
Bad Decisions – Benny Blanco and Snoop Dogg (featuring Jungkook, Jimin, V, and Jin)
This was a cute pop track but felt like a typical American pop tune. The only thing special about it was that it featured the vocal line of BTS. They could have at least featured the guys in the music video to make it interesting!
With You - Jimin and Ha Sung Woon
This song is the theme for the Korean drama Our Blues which stars Shin Mina (from Oh My Venus) and Lee Byung Hun. This is Jimin's first official song for a drama and I love that he did this. It's a beautiful and sweet song that matches his voice.
Sexy Nukim – Balming Tiger (featuring RM)
This is a song that keeps on giving. It’s such a good track and RM sounds so different here compared to his solo songs and on BTS. There is a certain confidence and sexy side to RM that came out because of this track that I would love to see more of. Plus, there is that one live performance of this song during that W Korea event that I cannot get out of my head! Tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way!
Rush Hour – Crush (featuring J-Hope)
I enjoyed this song so much and loved the dance that came with it. I would not have known this song without J-Hope’s involvement, so I’m glad he was on it!
Dreamers - Jungkook (featuring Fahad Al Kubaisi)
As a football fan, I was so happy when the news of JK recording this song for the World Cup came out. It was insane to see him performing this during the World Cup itself! My fandom worlds collided that day! It's such a feel-good and inspiring track that was perfect for the sport!
Left and Right – Charlie Puth (featuring Jungkook)
This song was a major earworm for me. Once I heard it, the lyrics were so hard to get out of my head! It was a funny video too, kudos to Charlie Puth for putting humor into the concept of the video.
Vibe – Taeyang (featuring Jimin)
Seeing Jimin dancing with someone other than BTS felt strange to me. But it also felt like a great intro to him going solo, like a teaser for when he came out with his album. It’s a cool song, I’m glad he did this with Taeyang.
On the Street – J-Hope with J. Cole
Seeing J-Hope do this song with J. Cole, someone he had admired for a long time, was a bit moving for me. BTS did a version of J.Cole’s song Born Sinner in their early years, with the track Born Singer. Seeing them together in the music video reaffirmed that this is a new chapter for them. I felt like he was going full circle by doing this track with J. Cole.
Smoke Sprite – So Yoon (featuring RM)
I am a big fan of RM’s collaborations, but because this one has English lyrics, this is the one that I sing along to the most. They sound so good together on this song, I would love it if they did another one!
Angel Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 – Muni Long, JVKE, NLE Choppa, Kodak Black (featuring JIMIN)
As a fan of the Fast and the Furious movies, finding out that Jimin was going to be on the soundtrack was very exciting. It’s not that big a part since there were many artists on the song, but I’m still happy that Jimin is a part of it. It's insane that there are two versions of the song that came out that both included Jimin. I'm so proud of him for doing this!
Don’t Ever Say Love Me – Colde (featuring RM)
This was such a big song. Big in the sense that I could sense the big feelings that the songs wanted to convey. It was deep! It was great that even when I did not understand the lyrics I could feel what the song was about. It’s such a good song, and the music video is also as good (and as deep). To me, it felt like art (a painting) in song. It gave off that kind of vibe to me.
Lilith – Halsey (featuring SUGA)
Halsey and SUGA work so well together. SUGA’s Interlude is the first BTS collab that I became such a huge fan of, and I sing their song a lot on karaoke when I can. I am a fan of this song because SUGA does not only rap but he also sings in this song. Again, since this is in English, I often sing along to this one. I kind of wish that SUGA had more to do in the track, but beggars can't be choosers so I'm happy that he did this one. I can't wait to hear the song that he recorded with Anderson .Paak. I would love to know what that one was about!
Too Much - Kid Laroi (featuring Jungkook)
This was something that I did not see coming until the teasers came out. I never imagined JK doing a song with Kid Laroi, although when I heard the track it made a lot of sense. The song sounded so good. The way they released it before JK's album Golden and the title track Standing Next To You? That was perfect! It was like a teaser of the vibe that Standing Next To You had!
I love that BTS created so much music and content knowing they would be gone for military service. There's so much of their old and new songs and content fans like me can enjoy while they are away. Given that Jin and SUGA made sure to have videos for ARMY to see while they are gone, I know more content is on the way. Jungkook said as much during Suchwita. Because of that, I'm confident the group still has material to release between now and 2025. I’m here for it. All of it! Keep them coming, we've got two years to consume everything!
So now that we've all caught up and looked back on these amazing collaborations, it's time for YOUR verdict! Which song has been your favorite so far? What song has hit you in a special way? Let me know in the comments section! Let's all share our thoughts about these collabs and any dream collaborations! With all they have done so far, knowing they will do more when they get back sounds so promising! We need 2025 to get here fast!
As I mentioned earlier, I am sharing the episode here for more on the Fandesals catch-up on BTS. If you understand Tagalog, you might like this one. It's a bit of an older post, but if you love BTS, it's something you can relate to. Be sure to leave a comment to let the Fandesals know what you thought of the ep! Hope you like it!
